Many adults are looking for a straighter smile, but if you don’t want to have braces, how do you achieve that goal? That’s where Invisalign comes in! With this innovative aligner system, you can have the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted. But what exactly is Invisalign and how does it work? Let’s take a look!

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a system of clear plastic aligner trays that are used to help straighten your teeth. They are similar to braces in that they straighten your teeth, but with no metal involved, they are much more comfortable and almost invisible. The aligner system can address crooked teeth, overbite, underbite, gaps, and more. These aligners can also be easily removed for when you eat and brush your teeth, so you can better maintain your oral health.

How Does Invisalign Work?

To start the Invisalign process, your dentist will create a virtual impression of your teeth using 3D computer-imaging technology. Once they have the impression of your teeth, they will have your aligners made. When they come in, you’ll be shown how to put them in and take them out.

You’ll need to wear your aligners at least 22 hours a day to see the full effects. As your teeth move, you will be instructed to move onto different aligners. Most patients change their aligners once a week, but it all depends on how quickly your teeth move.

As you continue with Invisalign, you’ll start to notice your teeth become straighter, any gaps will close up, and your bite will become more aligned.

Who is a Good Candidate For Invisalign?

Most adults with crooked teeth, gaps, and under or overbites are good candidates for Invisalign. Even if you had braces before and your teeth moved back, you may still be a good candidate for aligners. But there are a few questions you’ll want to ask yourself before deciding on Invisalign, including:

  • Am I willing and able to wear my trays at least 22 hours a day?
  • Do I have all my permanent adult teeth?
  • Do I hate the look or feel of traditional metal braces?
  • Do my teeth affect my self-confidence and/or oral health?
  • Do I have good oral hygiene habits?

After Invisalign

Once your Invisalign treatment is over, you won’t believe how great your smile looks! But there are a few things you’ll need to do to ensure your smile stays looking great. Your dentist will fit you for a retainer, and you’ll want to wear it as instructed to ensure your teeth don’t shift back to their former position.

You’ll also want to schedule your regular exams with your dentist to ensure your teeth stay healthy and that you’re practicing good oral hygiene habits.
