Sunscreen

The Life-Centered Dentistry staff is looking forward to summer fun as much as you are. Michigan summers come with all kinds of fun outdoor activities, including swimming, hiking, gardening, family camping trips, and lazy days at the beach.

We’re not only concerned about your family’s dental health at Life-Centered Dentistry but, we care for your total well-being. We want to remind you to think about creative ways to keep your family healthy, hydrated and protected from the sun as you head outside.

It doesn’t matter how old you are or if you’re male or female. One in five Americans will get skin cancer. Melanoma is the second most common form of cancer in women ages 15-29. Invasive melanoma is the fifth most common cancer in men.

Do you realize you can get sunburn even when it’s cloudy out? Up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV rays pass through clouds and contribute to skin cancer. So, it’s smart to protect yourself regardless of whether the sun is out or not.

Applying sunscreen every day is one of the simplest ways to avoid harmful skin damage. When selecting a sunscreen, make sure the label says:

  • Broad spectrum: The words “broad spectrum” means that the sunscreen can protect your skin from both types of harmful UV rays — the UVA rays and the UVB rays.
  • SPF 30 or higher: The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that you select a sunscreen with an SPF rating of 30 or higher.
  • Water resistant: Dermatologists also recommend that you look for the words “water resistant.” This tells you that the sunscreen will stay on wet or sweaty skin for a while before you need to reapply. Water resistance lasts either 40 or 80 minutes. Not all sunscreens offer water resistance.

Besides sunscreen, there are other things you can do to protect your skin, such as wearing hats and light-weight clothing. Also, consider limiting the amount of time you spend in direct sunshine.

You can minimize sun damage to your oral health, too.

  • Apply UV-blocking lip balm of SPF 15 or higher to help prevent cancer. Pick up a tube at your next dental appointment.
  • Dry mouth can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Bring a water bottle with you to help keep teeth and gums healthy!
  • Chlorine can weaken your teeth, so be sure to brush your teeth after swimming in a chlorinated pool. Don’t forget toothbrushes for the kids. Your hygienist has a selection for your child to choose from.
